NEVER TRAIN ALONE Our tips for reducing those feelings of intimidation in a gym

Going to the gym can be an intimidating experience, especially if you're new to fitness. The feeling of being surrounded by experienced gym-goers who seem to know exactly what they're doing can be overwhelming and make you feel self-conscious. However, all gyms should feel like a place for everyone, and there are ways to overcome gym intimidation and make the most of your experience. Here are Fitness Space Wimbledon’s top tips

1. Start with a plan!
I know this can sound intimidating on its own, but it really doesn’t need to. Before you even step foot in the gym, it's important to have a plan. Knowing what exercises, you want to do. Are you planning to go to a class, do some cardio or lift some weights? It really doesn’t need to be any more complicated than that. All that matters is that you are giving yourself the time to develop your confidence. At Fitness Space Wimbledon, we will provide you with a structured program with a dedicated coach so just ask us or take advantage of an induction where we will guide you around the gym and how to feel confident using key pieces of equipment.

2. Get a gym buddy
One of our principles is Never Train Alone! Working out with a friend can make the gym experience much less intimidating. Having someone to talk to and share the experience with can help you feel more at ease and less self-conscious. Plus, a gym buddy can provide motivation and push you to try new things. From this month we are launching free buddy passes for all members, so grab a few and bring a friend along to your next gym session. Alternatively try one of our 50+ classes. They are all full of like-minded people who will all remember their first class. The support is always there.

3. Ask for help
At Fitness Space Wimbledon we pride ourselves on making ourselves available to support our members. All our staff are directly employed and part of a team who want to help everyone enjoy the gym and hit their goals. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Our staff and personal trainers are there to provide that extra confidence boost in using equipment correctly and safely. If you're not sure how to use a machine or perform an exercise, don't hesitate to ask us.

4. Choose the right time
Remember that going to the gym is for many the only hour they get in a day where they can truly focus on themselves. Cherish and value that time. Try to come to the gym on different days and times at first so you can figure out a time that makes you feel the most comfortable. We cap our membership deliberately, so everyone feels comfortable in the gym, even at peak times. Some people love a bustling gym, but others can find it overwhelming. Do what’s right for you!

5. Focus on yourself
Remember that everyone at the gym is there for the same reason – to improve their health and fitness. Don't compare yourself to others or worry about what others might be thinking of you. Trust us, no one is there to judge you. We are a community of support driven people. Focus on your own goals and progress. Most of all celebrate your achievements no matter how small they may seem. We will be there to cheer you on all the way.

We hope you find these tips useful!
